The concept

This site is drawn the way I draw on paper: pen lines first, paint right behind them, until the picture comes alive. Here is each layer on its own, then all of it together.

00Colours

Night paper, bone ink and one red pen. Nothing else.

01In numbers

Everything on the site is drawn from these, counted from the files themselves.

02Density

Every picture is read for its edges, and the strongest ones become pen lines. Drag to choose how many.

03Lines

First the pen alone: the picture as red line work. The timeline below runs with it.

04Paint

Then the brush alone: colour laid along the same contours.

waiting to be seenbrush · 1.8 s

05Lines + paint

Both at once, a beat apart. The lines soak in and the picture is left.

waiting to be seenpen → brush → soak → photo · 2.7 s

06The clock

The engine's real timings, phase by phase, slowed 1.8× so the pen is visible.

07Together

The lines never stop: they let go of one painting and flow into the next. Press next.
